International conference on Nature, Nation and Society
Reconsidering "Politics" in Social and Political Geography
June 13 - 15, 2002, Nijmegen, The Netherlands
Social changes over the course of the last decade or more have challenged several key features of the modern conception of the political sphere, above all its focus on the nation-state and human beings as political container and content. Processes like the emergence of techno- and bio-politics, the decline of the nation-state, the loss of stable political coordinates and the economic concentration of mass media indicate a worldwide, rapid and profound transformation of the political sphere.
By focusing on the interrelation of nature, nation and society – three constitutive terms of modern political theorizing – scholars are invited to reconsider the political and its transformation within their discipline.
Our guest lecturers, Prof. Derek Gregory, Dr. Virginie Mamadouh, Prof. Wolfgang Natter and Prof. Walter Reese-Schäfer will adress one or several of the following topics of the parallel sessions:
- “Critical Geography” and political philosophy: tracing the links
- The politics of nature and the nature of politics
- Public sphere – political sphere
- Politics beyond the nation-state
