The symbol of Janus in the homepage of NCBR is a playful reproduction of the stone-carved relief of the face of Janus that was often placed above doorways of old Roman homes. Placed at the threshold, the image of the god conveys both a welcome and a demarcation of a boundary, a border. Janus was worshipped as the god of gates and doors (ianua), beginnings and endings (as in the month January), and hence was represented with a double-faced head, each looking in opposite directions.
